What is left of local handicrafts in Saida? Did they exist in previous centuries? The documentation is scarce and very unclear. Old maps make us think that certain neighbourhoods were specialized in one field or another: cotton and silk spinning, weaving, goldsmith trade, copperware trade, wrought iron works, cabinet-work… of which there is no trace today. Wood handicrafts are the only ones left: turners, engravers, in layers. The Zikak el Kilani neighbourhood is occupied nowadays by carpenters who only make utility goods. There is where we find low, round and rectangular tables, buskins or qabqabs, garlic pestles, maamul moulds… meant for a rural Clientele. Some of these objects have inspired Lebanese artists who painted them and exhibited them in art galleries.
