Khan El Qishli was built in the 17th century by Ali Agha Hammoud. Also known as Khan Al Hammoud or Khan El Hummus, its proximity to the port made it a strategic centre for the trade of hummus (chickpeas) and other grains. It was later turned into a French military headquarters and a prison for men. Currently under renovation by the DGA through a fund from the Italian Government, the khan will serve as a strategic centre for vocational training as well as exhibiting and trading of local art crafts.
