Emir Fakhreddine II built his Tuscan-style palace on a small hill overlooking the sea. The nearby plaza was subsequently named Dar Al Emir, meaning House of the Prince, and is currently known as Dahr Al Mir Plaza. The palace suffered greatly from earthquakes and wars, but palace remnants have been restored by the World Bank and the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, that transformed it partially into a medical and community clinic.
