Visited by men and women alternately, the hammams, witness of bygone days, are disappearing. This is mainly due to new and modern habitats equipped with sanitary installations.
In the old city of Saida, all the hammams are destroyed or out of service, with the exception of “Hammam el Ward” recently renovated. The others are Hammam el Mir, Hammam el Jedid, Hammam el Souk, and Hammam el Sheik. The most beautiful hammam, “Hammam el Mir” was erected by prince Fakhreddine II, and used to stand between the Khan and the port. It was famous for the beauty of its interior design and the quality of its marble mosaics. Today, the only things left are the marks of its location on the ground.
